Vier seizoenen #2 - Four Seasons #2

Het was iets wat al jaren op mijn to-dolijstje stond: foto's in kalligrafie omzetten. Ik had op internet al zoveel mooie voorbeelden zien langskomen en ik had me ook al zo lang het prachtige book van Denise Lach - Calligraphy A Book of Contemporary Inspiration - aangeschaft. In mijn vierseizoenenboekje waaruit ik hier een paar weken geleden al een paar pagina's heb getoond, is het ervan gekomen.

Per seizoen heb ik een foto gekozen en die "nagekalligrafeerd". Deze dubbele pagina's komen telkens na de pagina met het gedicht over het desbetreffende seizoen.

De tekst is bij zulke werken helemaal ondergeschikt aan het beeld en daarom heb ik gewoon telkens hetzelfde gedicht genomen als op de inleidende pagina.

In mijn vorige post over die boekje was ik trouwens nog vergeten een foto van de binding erbij te zetten. Bij deze...

Zoals je ziet, is de kaft nog altijd leeg. Ik wacht nog op inspiratie, maar ooit komt het goed!

It had been on my to do list for years: make calligraphy based on nature pictures. I saw so many nice examples on the internet and I even bought the beautiful book Calligraphy A Book of Contemporary Inspiration by Denise Lach. In my four seasons booklet that I showed here some weeks ago, I finally did it.

I chose one picture per season and "copied" it into calligraphy. In the booklet, each spread is right after the page with the poem about the season. As text is not important in this kind of works, I simply took the same poem.

I forgot to include a picture of the binding in my previous post, so I'm adding one here. As you can see, the cover is still empty. Still waiting for inspiration, but I'm sure it will come one day!

Kaarten met gelliprints #2 - Cards with Gelliprints #2

Lang geleden heb ik een eerste setje kaarten met gelliprints getoond. Nu kom ik eindelijk met nog een kaartje waarop ik een gelliprint heb verwerkt. Die printjes zijn meestal kleurrijk en vrolijk, maar deze keer heb ik er een serieuze kaart mee gemaakt: een kaart voor een collega, om troost te bieden bij het overlijden van haar vader.

Op het printje heb ik een stempeltje afgedrukt en geëmbost. De tekst heb ik in een eigen variatie op copperplate geschreven, met rondere, minder hoge letters en met minder krullen.

A long time ago I showed a first set of cards made with gelliprints. Now I finally come up with another card with a gelliprint. Those prints are usually colourful and cheerful, but this time I made a serious card: for a colleague, to bring her comfort when her father passed away.

On the print I stamped and heat-embossed a small stamp. I wrote the poem in my own variation on copperplate, with rounder, shorter and less curly letters.

Kerstraam - Christmas Window

Er zijn zo van die dingen die ik al lang eens wil doen. Schrijven met pipet. Kalligrafie aan het raam. Kerstversiering met kalligrafie. Tot voor een paar maanden had ik geen raam waar ik iets met kalligrafie kon doen, maar in ons nieuwe huis hebben we wel een geschikt raam. Tijd voor kerstversiering met kalligrafie aan dat raam dus. En dat schrijven met pipet, dat heb ik er ook in kunnen verwerken.

In de diy-catalogus van Søstrene Grene - wat ben ik blij dat die winkel ein-de-lijk ook naar België gekomen is! - vond ik leuke kerstboompjes uit papier. Ik heb ze uit twee soorten papier gemaakt: goud en mijn eigen gekalligrafeerde papier.

Daarvoor heb ik eerst ettelijke bladzijden volgeschreven met pipet. Geen lettertype, gewoon eigen krabbels, want dat is toch onleesbaar. Zo dus:

Uit die bladen en uit het gouden papier heb ik vervolgen boompjes geknipt, heel veel boompjes. Vervolgens heb ik de twee soorten papier afwisselend op elkaar geplakt met als resultaat vijf schattige kerstboompjes.

There are many things I've wanted to do for a long time. Writing with a pipette. Calligraphy to put in the window. Christmas decorations with calligraphy. In our old house, we did not have a suitable window for showing calligraphy, but in the new house we do. So I decided to make Christmas window decorations written with a pipette.

In Søstrene Grene's diy catalogue - so glad that shop finally came to Belgium! - I found cute paper Christmas trees. I made them out of two kinds of paper: gold and my own paper with calligraphy.

First I filled a lot of pages with pipette writing. Then I cut out lots of Christmas trees and then I assembled five little Christmas trees. The last picture shows how they look like in the window.

Drukwerk - Printed Wishes

Voor de kerstkaartenopdracht in de avondles in november had ik een hele reeks ontwerpen gemaakt. Eéntje ervan werd uiteindelijk gedrukt, maar ik vond het zonde om verder niets te doen met de andere. Op twee andere ontwerpen had ik het jaartal 2018 verwerkt en die heb ik nu voor mezelf afgewerkt. De andere - zonder jaartal - kan ik later nog wel eens afwerken en gebruiken (ooit, misschien).

Uiteraard zijn de letters handgeschreven. Ik heb ze ingescand en daarna nog digitaal bewerkt in Photoshop. Daarna heb ik ze als ansichtkaarten laten drukken. Gewoon bij Kruidvat en eigenlijk was ik aangenaam verrast door de kwaliteit. Het karton is mooi dik en stevig en de bedrukte kant is glanzend - net een echte ansichtkaart. Alleen de kleuren vielen wel een stuk feller uit dan op de computer, maar verder was ik eigenlijk heel tevreden. (En neen, hoor, ik word niet gesponsord, ik dacht gewoon dat dit misschien een handig weetje was.)

Voor deze kaart heb ik me laten inspireren door deze pin. Ik heb in een soort schoolschrift geschreven, de letters wit gemaakt en ze vervolgens op een simpele zwarte achtergrond gezet.

Voor de tweede kaart heb ik letters in getekende foundational op een stockfoto van internet (Pexels) gezet.

Alle goeds voor 2018!

When I had to design Christmas cards for my evening classes in November, I made a whole series of designs. Only one was printed then, but I liked many of them and I did not want them to stay in my sketchbook and not use them. The year 2018 figured on two of the designs and I have now finished those two and had them printed to use them as new year's cards myself.

Of course, I wrote the letters myself. Then I scanned them, edited them in Photoshop and had them printed as postcards.

For the first card I was inspired by this pin. I wrote "two zero one eight" in a kind of schoolish handwriting, turned the lettering white in Photoshop and put it on a simple black background. For the second card I chose lettering in drawn foundational (the word "two thousand and eighteen" in Dutch) and added it to a stock photo I got from the internet (Pexels).

Eigen lettertjes - My Own Hand

Vandaag heb ik nog eens in mijn map met oude scans van kaartjes gegrabbeld. Voor ik blogde, scande ik mijn gekalligrafeerde kaartjes om er nog een soort herinnering van te hebben voor ik ze opstuurde. Af en toe wil ik hier toch ook een paar van die oude kaartjes tonen. Om eens af te wisselen. En omdat er toch ook leuke dingen tussen zitten.

Ooit heb ik gewerkt aan een eigen lettertype. Ik schat dat dat een jaar of zes geleden was - ik kon toen alleen nog maar het humanistisch cursief. Dat lettertype heb ik een beetje gemixt met mijn eigen handschrift (maar dan traag, verzorgd en met platte pen geschreven) en de vormen heel rond gemaakt.

Voor een vriendin die van elfjes houdt, heb ik dit verjaardagskaartje gemaakt. Het paarse papier plakte op een groene basiskaart, in hetzelfde lichtgroen als het stukje papier waar het gedichtje op geschreven is, maar dat is bij het scannen helaas grotendeels verdwenen. Als je goed kijkt, zie je er nog een klein strookje van. Het elfje heb ik van internet afgedrukt en ingekleurd met kleurpotlood.

Met datzelfde lettertype heb ik nog deze kaart in de vorm van een boekje gemaakt, met de tekst in een spiraal geschreven:

En daarna heb ik eigenlijk niets meer in dat lettertype geschreven. Ik vraag me af of ik het niet eens van onder het stof moet halen en er een verbeterde versie van moet maken...

Today I rummaged about in my file with old scans of cards. Before I started blogging, I used to scan all my calligraphy cards to keep a memory of them before sending them out. Every once in a while, I like to show some of those old cards. Just for a change. Or because some of them are a bit nice too.

A very long time ago, I worked on my own hand. I think it must have been about six years ago. At that point of time, I only knew the italic hand. I mixed that with a bit of my own handwriting (but written slowly, carefully and with a broad nib) and made the shapes very round.

I made the first card for the birthday of a friend who likes fairies. The text is a little poem in Dutch about fairies. Originally, the purple paper was sticked onto green cardstock, in the same light green as the paper on which I wrote the text. This green paper however disappeared in the scanning process. I printed the fairy from the Internet and coloured it with colouring pencils. With the same hand I also made a birthday card in the form of a little book. The text written in the spiral is about flowers in all colours, that's why I wrote the Dutch word for 'flowers' in different colours.

After these cards I did not make any cards with this hand anymore. I'm wondering if I shouldn't take it up again and make a better version of it...

Lange reis - Long Journey

Vandaag heb ik een goede collega uitgezwaaid. Morgen betreedt ze nieuwe professionele paden, dus moest er een passend kaartje gemaakt worden. De spreuk mocht wel een beetje symbolisch zijn voor de gelegenheid, leek me. Ik heb ze geschreven in een combinatie van getekende kapitaaltjes en een op Copperplate gebaseerd handschrift.

Ik had me vorig weekend bij een bezoekje aan de Action niet kunnen inhouden bij de leuke kraft-designpapiertjes, maar kijk, er is er al meteen eentje van pas gekomen. Het airmail-tapeje heb ik al een hele tijd en ik weet eigenlijk al niet meer waar ik het gekocht heb.

Met dit kaartje doe ik mee aan:
- The Crazy Challenge #CCH 225: R staat voor... reis - en ook voor rood en blauw (want dat begint in het Engels ook met een R)
- Penny's Paper-Crafty Challenge 284: Anything goes

Today I had to say goodbye to a good colleague of mine. Tomorrow she will start a new job and that needs to be celebrated with a card, of course. The sentiment is symbolic: it says 'Every long journey starts with a first step' in Dutch. I wrote it in drawn capitals and a Copperplate-based hand.

While visiting the Action shop last weekend, I could not resist the beautiful kraft design paper. But well, I already used one now! I bought the airmail tape already a long time ago, and I can't even remember where. 

With this card I enter:

Vlinderverjaardag - Butterfly Birthday

Vandaag is Sarah jarig. Proficiat, Sarah! Ze wilde graag veel kaartjes krijgen, daarom heb ik met veel plezier een kaartje voor haar gemaakt. Hopelijk heeft de postbode het ondertussen bij haar bezorgd...

Zo heb ik mijn lettertjes van vorig najaar nog eens kunnen oefenen.

Door de vlinders kan ik hiermee meteen ook meedoen met de challenge maart/april van Anreda, waar het thema "vlinders" is.

Today is Sarah's birthday. Congratulations, Sarah! She wished to receive lots of cards, so I made one for her as well. I hope the postman already delivered it to her mailbox...

The sentiment says "hooray, it's your birthday" and this was a good occasion to practice the letters I learned last October.

With this card I also enter the March/April challenge by Anreda, themed "butterflies".

Aquarelbloemen - Watercolour Flowers

Het werd tijd om mijn aquarel-angsten voorgoed te overwinnen, dus heb ik er mijn aquarelverf en -penselen en wat stukjes papier bijgepakt. Zomaar wat uit het hoofd schilderen bleek niet echt een succes, maar bloemetjes min of meer naschilderen uit een boek of van het internet, dat ging al wat beter. En omdat ik dan toch met verf aan het kliederen was, heb ik maar meteen een hele reeks kaartjes bijeengekliederd:

Met dit eerste kaartje doe ik mee aan de challenge van CAS(E) this Sketch! #161, waar deze week de volgende sketch uitgewerkt moet worden:

Omdat ik de voorkant zo wel goed vond, maar ik natuurlijk altijd handgeschreven lettertjes wil toevoegen, heb ik hier de binnenkant beschreven:

Zoals jullie zien, heb ik de wens deze keer neutraal gehouden - de kaartjes hebben nog geen bestemmeling en een bloemetje past voor veel gelegenheden.

Met dit laatste kaartje doe ik mee aan challenge #249 bij Dutch Card Lovers. Het kleurenpalet van de opgave is helemaal mijn ding! Helaas lijken de kleuren van mijn kaartje op de foto toch weer wat anders...

I really wanted to overcome my watercolour fears, so I decided to grab my watercolour paints and brushes and some pieces of paper. Painting flowers without example didn't really work out well, but more or less imitating paintings from a book and the internet went much better. And so I decided to make a whole series of watercolour flower cards.
The sentiment is always the same, and says "a flower for you". I think this can go for a lot of different occasions.
- With the first one I take part in CAS(E) this Sketch! challenge #161
- On the second card I used 3D tape to lift the watercolour painting and dressed it up with twine
- For the third card I thought the front should just stay like this, but you know me, I always want to add hand-written letters somewhere, so I wrote the sentiment on the inside
- The fourth card has the same sentiment, but in French. With this card I take part in challenge #249 by Dutch Card Lovers

Zwart-wit - Black and White

Jammer genoeg zijn er ook triestige gebeurtenissen die om een kaartje vragen. Persoonlijk vind ik zulke kaartjes altijd moeilijk om te maken. Ik wil er toch iets moois van maken, in de hoop dat ik daarmee ook echt een beetje troost kan bieden.

Deze twee kaartjes in zwart-wit heb ik al een tijdje geleden gemaakt, maar had ik nog niet getoond.

De blaadjes aan de rand van dit eerste kaartje heb ik met echte blaadjes uit de tuin gestempeld. Zowel voor het stempelen als voor de tekst heb ik witte gouache gebruikt. Het lettertype is een soort van eigen handschrift op basis van Copperplate.

Voor dit kaartje heb ik "gewoon" in Copperplate geschreven. In dit geval heb ik de uitvoering sober gehouden, maar ik vind dat lettertype toch altijd een stijlvol effect hebben. Voor het achtergrondpapiertje heb ik een staaltje behangpapier gebruikt. Tja, ik blijf upcyclen... Het idee van een lintje door een labeltje heb ik van Miranda's blog.

Unfortunately, there can be sad occasions that require a card. It's always difficult to make a card for such an occasion, I think. But I do want to make it a beautiful one, hoping that it will comfort the person who receives it.

I made these two cards in black and white already some time ago, but I did not show them yet. On the first one, the leaves are stamped with real leaves from our garden. Both the stamping and the writing are done with white gouache. The font is some kind of own handwriting based on Copperplate hand. The second card is written in Copperplate hand, but just a plain version of it. The background paper I used is a piece of a wallpaper sample. Yes, I keep on upcycling... The idea of the label with the ribbon comes from Miranda's blog.

Kerstkaart januari - January Christmas Card

De eerste uitwerking van mijn goede voornemen voor dit jaar is een feit! Ziehier:

Het was lang geleden dat ik nog eens op papier geborduurd had, dus daarmee heb ik een labeltje gevuld. De sneeuwvlokken op de achtergrond heb ik met witte inkt gestempeld, de tekst heb ik erbij geschreven in een eigen handschrift dat op Copperplate is gebaseerd.

This is the first card I made after my new year's resolution for 2016. I filled a label with paper embroidery, stamped snowflakes for the background and wrote the text in my own handwriting based on Copperplate.

Winter

Eindelijk komt het er nog eens van om met een challenge mee te doen! Bij het zien van de lay-out van Creaine Challenges (#55) had ik meteen een idee. Uiteindelijk heeft het nog bijna een maand geduurd voor ik tijd heb gevonden om dat idee uit te werken, maar kijk, het is gelukt:

Ik heb gekozen voor de kleurencombinatie zwart-wit-zilver (hoewel het zilver op de foto niet echt goed uitkomt). De pinguïn is een stempel van Els Brigé die ik met pastelpotlood heb ingekleurd, de sneeuwvlokken heb ik van een stempeltje dat ik al meer dan 10 jaar heb, maar dat nog altijd geregeld eens van pas komt. Het achtergrondpapiertje is een staaltje behangpapier met een glitterpatroon (ik hou van upcycling, weet je wel). De wens heb ik met witte pen geschreven in een eigen handschrift dat op Copperplate gebaseerd is.

I finally found some time again to take up a challenge: Creaine Challenges #55. I chose to make a card in black-white-silver. However, the silver is not very silvery in the picture. The penguin stamp is from Els Brigé, I coloured it with pastel pencils. The snowflakes are stamped with a more than 10 years old stamp, that I still use from time to time. The background is a sample of wallpaper with glitter pattern (I like upcycling, you know). The sentiment says "warm winter wishes", I wrote it with a white pen in a handwriting that is based on Copperplate calligraphy.
